ENGINE REASSEMBLY 57

14. Install the primary chain on the two sprockets and install them as a unit on the engine (see Figure 23) with the engine sprocket on the cush drive shaft and the outer clutch hub on the transmission main shaft.

15. Check the movement of the top run of the primary chain halfway between the two sprockets.  If it moves more than 5/8", replace the chain.

16. Install the inner clutch hub on the main shaft.  Put some Loc-Tite on the threads and install the clutch lock washer and nut on the shaft, finger tight.

17. Install the cush drive cam on the cush drive shaft (see Figure 24).  Measure the cush drive spring.  If it is less than 1.4", replace it.  Install the spring and spring stop on the shaft with the splines aligned properly.

18. Put some Loc-Tite on the threads of the cush drive nut and install it and its lock washer on the crankshaft threads.

19. Install the clutch holding tool on the hubs (see Figure 25) with the handle turned clockwise against the cush drive shaft.  With a 9 mm socket mounted Allen wrench, tighten the cush drive nut to 65-70 ft.-lb. torque.

20. Leave the clutch tool in place and tighten the clutch hub nut to 65-70 ft.-lb. torque (see Figure 26).

21. Spin the inner clutch hub to be sure it rotates while the outer hub remains stationary. 22. Clean the I 1 clutch plates and check carefully for wear or damage.  Lay each one on a sheet of plate glass to check for warping.  Replace any doubtful parts.

23. Check the thickness of the pads on the friction plates (see Figure 27).  If any are worn, replace the entire set.
