3. Hook a long drift into the looped end of the spring (see Figure 20). Turn the spring 11/2 turns and install the loop into the retaining boss at the rear of the case. Be careful not to cut your fingers.
4. Install the other washer and snap ring on the shaft above the spring. Use a new snap ring with the sharp edge toward the left end of the shaft.
5. Install the kick starter lever on the shaft and test to be sure the shaft turns and returns correctly. Remove the lever.
6. Install the .078" thick flat hardened washer on the transmission main shaft against the bearing. Install the .220" thick inner clutch hub spacer against the washer.
7. Install the clutch needle bearing inner race on the main shaft against the clutch hub spacer (see Figure 21). The race should be clean and oiled.
8. Remove the needle bearing in the outer clutch hub with a sprocket and extension (see Figure 22) inserted into the rear of the outer hub.
9. Press the needle bearing out of the hub with a press or vise.
10. Install the new bearing in the opposite manner, so it's flush with the front surface of the outer clutch hub.
11. Be sure the primary side crankshaft and the inside of the cush drive shaft are clean, as these two have an interference fit.
12. Install the cush drive shaft on the crankshaft and tap it with a soft mallet to seat it.
13. Check the engine sprocket and outer clutch hub sprocket for wear
or damage. If any is visible, replace the part.
