ENGINE REASSEMBLY
17. Install the oil seal protector, part number999-201, over the left end of the crankshaft (see Figure 6).

18. Hold the crankshaft by the right drive shaft (see Figure 7) and the case with the other hand.  Be sure to support the connecting rod with your thumb.

19. Install the left drive shaft into the case until the bearing seats against its mounting boss.  The oil seal protector is now easily removed.

20. Set the case on a box with the right drive shaft pointing upward and the left shaft not touching anything.  Let it cool to room temperature.

CRANKSHAFT ALIGNMENT

1. If you install a new or rebuilt crankshaft or new engine cases, check the end play and alignment of the crankshaft.

2. The connecting rod big end has considerable side clearance for lubrication.  The crankshaft end play must be correct to prevent side load on the main bearings or the flywheels from hitting the connecting rod.

3. To check the end play of the crankshaft requires a dummy main bearing on the left shaft because the bearing is a press fit on the shaft, preventing the crankshaft from being slid back and forth easily.

4. Make a dummy bearing out of a used bearing in good condition.  Sand the inner and outer races (see Figure 8) until the bearing will fit in the engine case while the case is cool and allow the crankshaft to slide back and forth.

5. Install the shims on the left drive shaft and the dummy bearing over them (see Figure 9).

6. Install the three hollow guide pins in the left case and a new center case gasket supported on the pins.

7. Install the crankshaft into the left case with the dummy bearing seating against the mounting boss (see Figure 10).
