ENGINE REPAIR

15. If the old rings are used again, you don't have to hone the cylinder. If new rings are installed, hone the cylinder to remove the glaze from the walls. If you don't, the new rings may never seat properly.

16. Move the hone back and forth rapidly, to crosshatch the cylinder walls. The small lines should cross each other at right angles.

17. Be sure not to remove too much material with the hone. You just want to remove the oil glaze baked on the walls by combustion heat.

CHAPTER TWO

18. Check the end gap of the new rings after honing, to be sure they are the right size for the piston.

Piston Sizing Information

1. Figure 52 gives the numbers and sizes of new pistons.

2. Figure 53 gives the measured size of new pistons.

3. Figure 54 gives the piston-to-cylinder clearances to be followed.

4. Each piston has a letter stamped on top, as well as a number; A, B, C, D. A 'B' piston is 0,0002" (2/10 of one thousandth) larger than an 'A'. A 'C' is 0,0002" larger than a 'B', and a 'D' is 0,0002" larger than a 'C'.

5. The finished cylinders at the factory will vary 0,0002" to 0,0004", so the corresponding piston is fitted for the proper clearance.

CYLINDER LINER INSTALLATION

I . Put the cylinder in an oven and support it upside down by the fins.

2. Set the oven to 550 degrees (Fahrenheit). When the temperature of the cylinder reaches 500 to 550 degrees, the liner should drop out (see Figure 55).

3. If the liner hangs up slightly in the cylinder, gently tap it on the lower edge to clear it. Don't force it out. You can damage the cylinder so it will not transfer the heat from the new liner properly. Be sure the cylinder is not -heated over 750 degrees while removing the liner, or permanent distortion can result. If you can't get it out using the recommended procedure, take it to a machine shop for removal.
