ENGINE REPAIR

35. Turn the shift drum counterclockwise to the 1st gear position.

36. Install the detent assembly in the right case see Figure 42) and turn it in two or three turns while holding the shift drum all the way to the right with your finger.  Be sure the shift drum is ot moved to the left by the force of the detent spring.

37. As the detent assembly is screwed in, the shift drum will turn slightly to line up the detent hole in the drum with the detent plunger.  When the detent plunger is holding the shift drum in the first gear position, check the engagement of the dogs between the first idling gear on the main shaft and the first and third sliding gears on the lay shaft.  If the engagement is not the same as when checked previously, replace the shift drum.
38. Remove the detent assembly and turn the shift drum to the second gear position.  Screw in the detent assembly until the plunger engages the hole on the drum.  Check the engagement of the second gear dogs.

39. Install the selector shaft mechanism in the case.  Be sure it is properly seated and the return spring is on the anchor pin.  There will now be two shift drum selector pins between the tips of the selector pawl (see Figure 43).  The two pins should be an equal distance from the tips of the pawl.  Correct by bending the selector return spring until the pins are centered between the pawl tips.  Be sure the spring ends have a snug fit on the anchor pin after bending.

40. Repeat the checking processes for the selector and detent assemblies in third and fourth gears.  If the location of the selector pins on the drum varies from gear to gear, or if the detent installation results in poor gear engagement, replace the shift drum.
