18. Take the left fork (the first and third gear fork) and insert it
in the sliding gear on the lay shaft. Be sure it is installed right
side up.
19. Measure the side clearance of the fork in the gear groove with
a feeler gauge (see Figure 22). Measure both fork thrust pads and
both sides of each pad. If clearance is greater than .020", replace
the shift fork.
20. Repeat the procedure with the second gear fork on the sliding gear
on the main shaft, and the fourth and fifth gear fork on the sliding dog
on the main shaft. Maximum clearance is .02011 in all cases.
21. Measure the diameter of each shift fork's peg that fits in the
groove in the shift drum (see Figure 23).
22. Then measure the width of that fork's groove in the shift drum
(see Figure 24). Be sure you measure the correct peg and groove together.
Figure 24 shows the correct place to measure for first gear.
