ENGINE DISASSEMBLY
7. Heat the magneto side case and tap the bearings from their mounts
with a mallet and a suitable drift.
8. The hole in the magneto side case containing the lay shaft bushing
does not go all the way through the case. Hold the case over a wooden bench
with the bushing facing downward. Tap the case two or three times
on the bench and the bushing will fall out, if the case is warm enough.
9. Remove the crankshaft seals and the transmission drive bearing seals
with a mallet and a drift, pushing them out from inside the cases.
A 3/8" or 1/2" drive socket whose outside diameter is slightly smaller
than the seal makes a good drift. Put an extension on the socket
and use a soft mallet to tap the seals from their mounts.
10. Remove the main bearing from the primary side of the crankshaft
with two large screwdrivers or two pry bars (see Figure 22).
NOTE: The side loading caused by the prying is absorbed
by the balls in the bearing, and can mar the balls or the races and cause
failure of the bearing. Do not use the primary side main bearing
once it has been pried off the crankshaft. Replace it with a new
one.
11. Remove any shimming washers between the primary side main bearing and
the flywheel and tag them for identification.
