FRAME, SWINGING ARM, AND REAR SUSPENSION 113

6. Unscrew the top mount.  The cover and spring will then come off.

7. With the spring and cover off, test the shock by moving the plunger in and out.  Movement should be without any signs of binding but there must be dampening action along the plunger's total travel.  If there is dampening or resistance only along a portion of the plunger's travel, the shock may be low on oil.  If the plunger binds along any portion of its travel, the shaft is bent
and must be replaced.  Straightening is possible in an emergency, but replacement is recommended.  If the shock has been leaking oil, the seal must be replaced.
