Iceland on an OSSA (1980)
by Mats Nyberg, Sweden

The 22 litre tank was very useful. 100 km between gastation was normal going on the main highway. I you took the small backroads the was no gas. Not even farms where one could ask for help.
This northeast corner of Iceland is really empty.
The first day of riding we wanted to reach Myvátn. Not too far away on the map. So we took a detour to visit the forest, there is only one left on Iceland. One long hillside facing south covered with tiny dwarf birch trees that you find in Sweden in the very north on high altitudes.
We continued after a few hours of sightseeing towards Myvátn. Following the main ring road that circles the island we didn´t pass many houses. At one gas station we talked to to drunk buys. They were friendly and the talked to us about Icelandish women. Normally the people we met did not speak but only because they were very shy. At least in the coutryside peple did not speak english and therefore were afraid of saying anything. Very helpful though and not expecting anything back. Money?! Why?
That is the kind of mentality you can find among people not used to tourists. For them it is a way to survive in this harsh climate. I help you -next time you help me.
